Aegis Living welcomed Dr. John H. Fullerton and Kate McElroy Fullerton, PA-C of Hampton Health, Ltd. and their on-site geriatric medical practice to their assisted living community, Aegis of Corte Madera, in 2002.
One of the first and only Assisted Living communities in the nation to provide the expertise of a geriatric physician as part of its on-site services available to residents, Dr. Fullerton has served as the Aegis of Corte Madera Certified Medical Director for both Assisted Living and Alzheimer’s units-(“Life’s Neighborhood”) in addition to the duties of his on-site medical practice for the last nine years.
Traditionally, assisted living communities had been built upon a ‘social model’, addressing social issues such as isolation, prepared meals, and manageable living spaces. In addition to his focus on Internal Medicine and Geriatric care, Dr. Fullerton had long since witnessed the increasing importance for the addition of a ‘medical model’ to address complications of aging as well as medical issues and illnesses affecting the elderly and chronically ill individuals within assisted living communities.
His innovative methods for assisted living care, addressing the critical issue of adult children 'caregiver strain', promoting certified medical directorships and the role of mid-level practitioners in all phases of geriatrics have long been implemented and provided in his work at Aegis through the Hampton Health intellectual property subsidiary PALS™ ‘Physician Assisted Living Solutions’.
As the clinical preceptor and geriatrics lecturer for the Stanford Primary Care Associate's Program, Physician Assistant students rotate through the Corte Madera office as a designated Stanford University Medical School geriatric training site, as do students from the Physician Assistant Program of Samuel Merritt University and students of St. Mary’s Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency rotating in geriatrics under the mentorship of Dr. Fullerton who serves as the Education Director of Geriatric Medicine.
